Addressing a media conference, Teachers’ Union President Marco Bonnici said the MUT is proposing that educators’ salaries will no longer be linked to Government salary scales. Mr Bonnici added that the MUT will be making a formal request for discussions with Government on this proposal.
Through this move, Government schools would be transferred from the Public Service department to a new entity.
The MUT President explained that this would mean the union would be able to negotiate a better collective agreement for educators, as it would overcome the limitations of the civil salaries system based on scales.
Bonnici added that throughout its 100 years the MUT has always been visionary and has regularly updated itself.
The MUT President added that according to a survey they carried out, 80% of educators agree in principle with this proposal, entitled Malta Education. Bonnici further stated that this exercise had been carried out between October and November, and 345 educators had taken part.
In his address, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo stated that educators are part of an ecosystem, and for this reason, before replicating foreign education systems, these should be adapted to local realities.
